Let’s Talk FAB has been a lifeline that neither of us realised we needed.
On the many occasions we left a hospital or clinic it was never suggested from professionals that support or counselling would be a good idea for us - either individually or as a couple. So we tried to get on with our life; all the hurt and sadness building up and being blocked out as you try to go back to what you think life expects of you.
Eventually though you realise yourself or take advice from friends and family that you need help.
After a friend tried to find counselling for us it was so disheartening - 3 to 6 month waiting list for lots of different charities which is the affect of a lack of funding to offer this support via the NHS.
On top of that we had absolutely no help offered from our GP; even though now looking back on the conversation I had and what it took for me to find the courage to admit how much I was struggling to be turned away with no help offered was so upsetting and really makes you think you can’t need it that much if none of the doctors you have met suggest it.
I’m now more aware that it’s not suggested because it’s not easy to access even privately - waitlist are so long people like us lose faith it will ever be available to help us.
That’s where Laura came to us with an offer of help from Let’s Talk FAB. I’ve been a client of Laura’s for over 5 years now and she’s been aware of everything we have been going through.
We accepted an invitation to the attend the first Let’s Talk Fab retreat in May. To be honest I was quite anxious about it - I’m a very private person and don’t share too much. If I’m asked how I am it’s the same answer ‘I’m fine’ change the conversation away from where I know it’s heading and just paint a smile on and pretend nothings wrong.
Once we arrived in such a beautiful setting I was blown away by what an amazing experience we had. We joined a group of people all with their own stories and journeys to spend the day together and for that time you’re surrounded by people who just get you and understand what you’re going through. No judgement, no pity or their story is worse than ours just a group of people trying to find themselves again and not to feel defined by their fertility issues. It’s such a fantastic experience and one that I would recommend to any couple that just need a starting point to understand the help and support they might benefit from.
I’ve also been so grateful for the additional support the charity has offered us since the retreat to be there for us whenever we need it.
Laura’s vision for the charity is exactly what people need - an offer of support that you don’t need to wait months to get access to. A support that comes to find you and be there when you need them.
We are so proud of what Laura has achieved so far and Let’s Talk FAB will always have our support to continue the work it’s doing to help so many people.
